Ordering Gicleé Prints of Simple Gifts: Portraits in Forgivess

About Gicleé Prints

To replicate the subtle details of an original work a printing process utilizing highly specialized technology and fine art mediums, commonly referred to as the Gicleé or Giclée (pronounced zhee-clay, meaning "to spray") process, was developed in 1991 with noted printmaker Jack Duganne. With this process master printmakers, in collaboration with the artist, use digitized printing techniques to produce museum quality prints that are difficult to differentiate from the originals. Unlike the normal lithographic processes used to mass produce most limited edition prints, the Gicleé process captures and reproduces the artist's most minute subtleties in superb detail. Blended colors appear to be directing from the artist's brush and fine lines are captured in sharp, crisp detail. The key to the process is the Gicleé graphic printers that literally spray archival water based dyes onto 100% cotton, acid-free paper. The dyes are deeply absorbed into the paper fibers to provide maximum realism with deep saturated colors along with subtle tints and blends.

title slide: Portraits of Forgivess by Jim Mahanes

Jim Mahanes a watercolorist from Louisville KY was inspired to create a series of thirty paintings portraying the Amish people and their community after viewing the documentary film, The Power of Forgiveness, in conjunction with the Oates Institute's Healing Power of Forgiveness conference in November 2007. Mahanes was inspired by the radical forgiveness taught and lived out by the Amish community in Lancaster County that was portrayed by the film's  producer, Martin Doblmeier of Journey Films.

What was particularly poignant to the artist was  his work in the Amish communities of York, Lancaster and even the Nichol imines community (Where the shootings took place). This work several years ago resulted in a number of photographs and stories captured among amish youth. When the incident where a deranged man named Chas Roberts went to the school in Nichol Mines and did the shooting. The incident prompted a review of those visits and the images made.

Then, as a result of seeing the Dobermier film and the seminar on “The Power of Forgiveness” Jim began his completion of the “Simple Gifts collection”.

As a behavioral science professional and teacher, Jim was interested in the “process” of forgiveness among the Amish  children who had been traumatized by the loss of their schoolmates, How does the developmental emotions of grief and anger coincide with the cultural expectations to forgive??

This question intrigued the artist AND the psychologist in Jim.

Also of interest is the juxtaposition of a man who did the shooting and the remarkable response of the victims. Here was a man that lost his own daughter and was tormented by his unwillingness to FORGIVE God. It is quite an experience to see a human brain, {imaged via a Functional MRI}  in the act of forgiving…alongside the same kind of an image of a brain of someone in the turmoil of  revenge.

There is a story here…both in images of art and the understanding of thought.
